Temporary Fit Adjustments for Slightly Big Costumes

We understand that sometimes costumes don’t fit perfectly.

Please don’t make any permanent alterations, some ideas you could try are:

1. Use Safety Pins or Dressmaker’s Pins on the Inside

• Pin inside seams or underarm areas where it won’t show on stage.

• Use flat-headed or fine pins to avoid discomfort.

• Pins should be removed immediately after the performance.

2. Use Fabric Clips or Costume Clips

• Clips hold excess fabric discreetly without piercing it.

• Easy to remove and don’t damage the fabric.

3. Use Double-Sided Fashion Tape

• Tape can hold fabric in place temporarily at the waist, neckline, or cuffs.

• Removes cleanly without residue.

4. Wear a Belt or Sash

• Use a costume-appropriate belt, sash, or ribbon to cinch the waist or gather excess fabric.

• This adds a natural “adjustment” that looks part of the costume.

5. Layering with Under-Garments

• Sometimes layering a tighter undergarment (like a fitted vest or corset) can help fill out the costume better.

6. Tucking or Folding Fabric

• Tucking excess fabric into the waistband or under the costume layers can help adjust fit without pins or tape.

• Good for small size differences.

Key Notes:

• Always make sure temporary fixes are secure but removable without damaging the costume.

• Document any pinning or adjustments so volunteers/staff can restore the costume after use.

• Encourage performers to practice wearing the adjusted costume to make sure they’re comfortable and safe.
